We set up beehives in schools and the students are the kaitiaki of it over the seasons. We visit and teach the students all about bees and how to look after them. For example, they can make the beehive, the frames and bee baths- which the students can fill up when needed. We also teach them about why we need to look after the bees because they are important to our food security and environment. After our in class lessons, 12 students can put on beekeeper suits and help us open and check the hive. An important part of our enterprise is financial sustainability, so we sell the honey through the school community and our website to help fund the hive for the following year and be able to bring on more schools.
