Kōanga Spring invites us to notice and celebrate the changing seasons

As the days start to get longer and warmer we can get outside to learn and take action for te taiao, with events such as Save the Kiwi Week, Recycling Week, Bird of the Year, Outdoor Classroom Day and World Soil Day taking place in Term Four.

Week 1

Oct 9 - 15    Save the Kiwi Week

Learn about and take action for kiwi, with lots of resources on the official website (using the link above). Science Learning Hub also have a list of regional events and resources here.

Week 2

Oct 16 - 22    Recycling Week

Visit the website to find resources and more details about this week of waste reduction, with a different challenge and focus each day.

Week 4

Nov 2  Outdoor Classroom Day

This international event is a great excuse to take learning outside, but you don't have to be restricted to this one date! Click on the link above to find resources and register your centre or school if you're planning to take part.

Oct 30 - Nov 12   Bird of the Year

This year has a special focus: Bird of the Century, to mark Forest and Bird's 100th celebration. Click on the link above to visit their website with the full list of manu, including some extinct species this year, and then vote for your 5 favourite birds.

Dec 5  World Soil Day

Late Term 4 - Term 1, 2024

NZ Bug of the Year

This new competition ran for the first time from Nov 2022 - Feb 2023, and will be running again this year. The voting dates and nominees have not been announced yet, but keep checking the website for updates closer to November.
