The Kea Toolkit is a virtual toolkit of advocacy resource materials to support kea conservation. Kea are a highly vulnerable endemic species — a taonga for iwi — exposed to many threats across Te Waipounamu, the South Island of Aotearoa. This toolkit encourages environmental actions and positive target behaviours to protect kea and their habitat.
These free resources were produced as a collaboration between the Kea Conservation Trust, Zoo and Aquarium Association and the Department of Conservation, with the support of Ngāi Tahu.

What the toolkit does:
- Increases public knowledge of kea and awareness of their status as taonga for iwi
- Advocates for kea — encouraging understanding, respect, care and protection
- Provides consistent messaging about kea across providers and organisations
- Supports community groups, zoos, education providers and tourism operators with ready-made materials
- Enables targeted behaviour changes to address kea threats across Te Waipounamu.
